Theme:
Theme is the central idea or message of a story. The theme, or message, of "The Hunger Games" is that you only can be in charge of your yourself. No one else can force you to do something. Katniss stood up to the Capital because they can't decide who dies or is treated unfairly. Katniss put out that message to everyone watching and were inspired. All in all, the theme, or message, of this story is that only you are the one that can direct your life.
Conflict:
Conflict is the struggle that the main character has to overcome. In this book, "The Hunger Games", the type of conflict is an external conflict because the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, is against the Capital, which is the antagonist. In that case, this is a man vs. society conflict, which is the protagonist vs. a group of people with a cause. The Capital is continuously against Katniss, and they are making her do what they want in the Hunger Games. Katniss is against that and is trying to stand up to the Capital that they don't own her or the other tributes. She is standing up for the districts, including her own.
Author's Perspective:
Suzanne Collins was born on August 10, 1962. She is the youngest of four children. Suzanne Collins graduated from the Alambama School of Fine Arts, got a double major in theater and telecommunications, and went on to get a master's degree from the New York University. Collins then went on to write for several children's television programs after graduate school, which include "Clarissa Explains It All" and "Little Bear". Suzanne's work in television programs caught the attention of James Proimos, who was the creator of the WB children's program "Generation O". James Proimos was the one who urged Suzanne Collins to write books. suzanne Collins then published her own books, such as "The Underland Chronicles" series, and "The Hunger Games" trilogy, which was later a film with the screenplay written by Collins. Today, she lives in Connecticut with her husband Cap Pryor, who is an actor, and her two children.
Motif:
Motif is a reoccurring concept that leads to the theme of the story. The motif of "The Hunger Games" is survival. Katniss is constantly trying to survive against the other tributes who are trying to kill her. The concept of survival is said throughout the story, such as acquiring equipment and weapons, hunting animals for food, and find a water source in the arena. In "The Hunger Games", it is every man for himself. Survival is what every tribute in the Hunger Games is trying to accomplish.
Book Review:
"The Hunger Games" is about a girl name Katniss Everdeen who volunteers to be a tribute, or competitor, in the 74th annual Hunger Games to taker her little sister's place. The message this book delivers is that you have to stand up for yourself. You only can direct your life. Also, the message is surviving against a danger, or threat. My opinion about this book is that it was really adventurous and suspenseful. Also, there were some portions of the story that contained sadness, such as when Rue died in front of Katniss. My overall rating to this book would be four and a half mockingjays out of five mockingjays. The one who could read this book would be a person who likes adventure and suspense because there are many killing scenes in the book. I think the reader should be at least ten years old to read this book.
