Biography:
Elie Wiesel was born on September 30, 1928. His hometown where he grew up is Sighet, Transylvania, which would later be known as Romania. Elie Wiesel full name is Eliezer Wiesel. His parents were Shlomo and Sarah. He was the only son of the family. Elie had three sisters. In his early life, Elie Wiesel pursued religious studies at a yeshiva, which is an Orthodox Jewish college or seminary. He also grew up with his three sisters. In addition to his early life, Elie was influenced by his grandfather and mother by their traditional spiritual beliefs. He was also influenced by his father's ideas about Judaism.
During his early life, one event affected Eliezer Wiesel the most: the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the mass destruction or mass slaughter of Jewish people caused by the German Nazi regime. This occurred during the period of 1941-1945. Over 6 million Jewish people in Europe were murdered during the Holocaust. During his mid life, Elie Wiesel was encouraged by his friend, Francois Mauriac, to write about his experiences during the Holocaust. Wiesel wrote the book "Night" to share his experiences during the Holocaust. Later on, he went on to write on many other books. Eventually, Elie Wiesel became an international activist, public speaker, and a role model of peace. Elie Wiesel's historical impact was a big one. He expressed his ideas about how humans has mistreated one another and that peace needs to be promoted. Elie Wiesel has spoken out against injustice in many countries, such as South Africa and Cambodia. Eliezer Wiesel has become a figure and role model of peace and justice throughout many countries around the world.
In his late life, Elie Wiesel has went on to do many other things and accomplishments. Elie Wiesel has been awarded with the United States Presidential Medal of Freedom. Wiesel was also honored with the French Legion of Honor's Grand Croix. In 1986, Elie Wiesel was, in addition, honored with the Nobel Peace Prize award. Also, teaching was a passion of Elie Wiesel. Wiesel has taught in the City University of New York Judaic studies. He has also been a visiting scholar at Yale University. In addition, Elie Wiesel is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Boston University and the Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council from 1980 to 1986. Also importantly, Elie Wiesel, along with his wife, Marion Wiesel, founded the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity. In conclusion, Eliezer Wiesel has ultimately been a role model of peace and justice throughout the world.
